new star

new star published on No Comments on new star

calling a star exploding a “new” star and the birth of the universe “the big bang” is classic example of scientists naming things.

i’m sure you all learned at school that dinosaur means “terrible lizard”, despite them being neither. even worse is iguanadon, which means “iguana’s tooth”, because that’s what its discoverer thought he was looking at.

on the other hand there’s colymbosathon ecplecticos, which translates to “astounding swimmer with a large penis”. which is without a doubt the best dinosaur name. good job scientists!

Transcripts

sedna: hundreds of years ago, astronomers started to notice sometimes a new bright spot would appear in the sky. they called it a “nova”, meaning a “new” star.

sedna: but it turned out, it’s actually a white dwarf cannibalising a star and blasting its flesh into space.

sedna: they also noticed some of these were brighter than others, which they called a “supernova”, meaning a “big new” star. but it’s really a star ripping itself apart and dying.

sedna: but then they go and name the actual beginning of the universe… “the big bang”.
dini: you think that’s bad? w-wait ’till you hear what “dinosaur” means.
