probably should point out that not every supernova is quite as bright as its entire galaxy (there’s not a lot of room for nuanced explanation in these comics), but the fact that it’s even comparable to hundreds of billions of stars is impossible to get your head around.

sedna: when a star dies and explodes as a supernova, for just a few days it becomes brighter than all the other stars in its galaxy combined, before it disappears forever.
sedna: the photons from this light travel across the cosmos for millions or billions of years, and if you’re lucky, against all odds, a few of them end up exactly in your eye.
sedna: what wouldn’t you give for a chance to experience something like that?
